IMED1001 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Arrector Pili Muscle, Subcutaneous Tissue, Integumentary System
Document Summary
List the major layers of the epidermis, dermis and hypodermis. Name and describe at least 5 functions of integumentary system. Understand the components and function of each of those layers. Understand the structure and function of skin appendages. Thin skin on the dorsum of hand veins and tendons- not much fat to allow the tendons to move our fingers. Palmar of hand (thick sin) holding and using it flexor tendons, blood and nerves, more fat. Foot- thickest skin (protection- weight is going down through the feet, walking-adaptive feature) Composed of 2 distinct regions: epidermis: outermost (most superficial) protective shield (dry, hence moisturise and exfoliate) Sheds 50,000 cells/minute: dermis: (middle layer) making up bulk of skin, deep to epidermis, superior to (resting on) hypodermis. Pressure receptors, pain receptors(nociceptors) temperature receptors, vibration receptors. Meissner"s corpuscle (touch receptors- rapidly adapt: superficial dermis. Merkel"s disc receptors in superficial dermis: due to fact that it is unmyelinated, hence the nerve impulse goes away quickly.
