FNSC2200 Lecture 10: 3. Forensic Chemistry Intro
Document Summary
Key areas of consideration, to help select an appropriate chemical test in forensic contexts. Analytical chemistry in forensic examination is used to. Nothing is chemical free: we can understand chemical and physical properties if required and viable. Quantitative: how much of x is this made of. Tests/ techniques as such are used in forensic chemistry:- Principle: observe a sample and how it behaves when in contact with other substances. Identification of sample allows classification. e. g. a crystal structure known, can use chemical rxn such as colour change/ visible physical transformation or c change tests as a preliminary identification. Principles: takes the advantage of different ways of interactions between molecules to separate individual components in a mixture. Understand ratio of diff chemicals within a sample. Principles: uses understanding of how molecules absorb and reflect emr to identify and quantify individual components in a sample, by examining resultant spectrum. Molecules can absorb or emit emr at specific wavelgnths.
