Human Ecology 2 Notes
- In ecology, organisms are subjected to
evolutionary time scales to both abiotic (not
biological selective pressures) and biological
selective pressures
- Focus: abiotic selection pressures
- Energy require consistent input of energy to
fuel our continued existence (metabolism and
reproduction)
- All energy obtained from the sun
- Plants can use direct energy from sun, then fix
it in a form that humans can partake
- We are subject to loss of thermodynamics
- We are subject to entropy (chaos/disorder, if no
energy input)
- Survival requires the transformation of energy from
sun to usable forms
- When convert energy from one form to another, it is not lost/added to
- Just the forms changing
- Ca’t ake e eerg eept apturig eerg fro su
- Conversion of biomass cost energy
- Efficiency of conversion of energy is only
10%
- Each time energy moves from one level
to next of consumption, only 10% moves
- Plants convert 10% of solar energy
- When eaten by rabbit, only 10% of it
given = 0.1% of solar energy
- Fox eat rabbit = 0.001% only
- Meaning that high you are in food chain,
the more limited food is because of repeated
sequential transfers

organism, controls the distribution (?)

- Law of tolerance: distribution of species is
deteried…
- Those at the boundaries where we find species -> strong selective pressures
- Biological (genetic) adaptations allow us to push the limits
- Cultural adaptation = clothing (not separate to biological because we have brains enlarging to make
clothes = biological)
- Limiting factors are resource characteristics that limit
the number of individuals that can live in a particular
area
- If more plants fixing CO2 and sun energy into usable
form, more humans can live there
- Increase people per km2 = was agriculture, as it
increases the production of usable energy that humans
can benefit from
- Limiting factor changes the number of organisms it can
support
- Regulating factors = births/deaths rate expanding =
which changes vital rates of population
- If right at the edge of what organisms need in
environment, then strong selective pressure because more
competition
- Selection tends to be stronger on those edges
- Since it takes longer for skin cancer to show up, (40
years old), the selective pressure has less effect (tend to)
