ANHB1101 Lecture Notes - Lecture 9: Male Bonding, Maternal Sensitivity, Mating System
Document Summary
Anatomy undergoes change for changed behaviour eg. bipedalism. Social behaviour = a suite of adaptations to the ecological and social environment. Behaviour changes due to selective pressures (natural selection). Changes allow increased efficiency in certain environs moving (speed, energetic, not falling), feeding (searching, manipulating, chewing), reproducing (mating, maternal+paternal care). For survival and fitness must find food and avoid predation. Social organisation group composition + group stability. Mating system who mates with who and what genetics result. Males kill offspring that isn"t their own (especially in group take over) Lower rank males must be subtle from dominant males when mating. Result of intra-sexual competition eg. males force other males to leave the group. Male bonding if stay in natal group. Dilution less likely to be predated when more members. Reflects a compromise between the costs and benefits = 20-30. Artificially influenced eg. more food available=larger groups won"t matter. Males compete over females reproductive success, access to females.
