The nuclei are spread around giving the impression of strata but there is only one layer of cells. Stratified squamous epithelium non- keratinised covers surfaces exposed to mechanical abrasion. Stratified squamous epithelium keratinized covers surfaces exposed to mechanical abrasion and desiccation. Specialised in withstanding the toxicity of the urine and to accommodate a high degree of stretching. Intermediate layers polymorphic maturing and flattening towards the surface. Degenerate and replaced by the cells from below.
