Document Summary

Dissociation exists on a continuum: disconnecting your mind from your body, e. g. Monks, arctic hunter: exposed to the same experience, but different levels of dissociation, different life experiences, different brains. Parasympathetic and sympathetic arousal systems do not have language systems: purely driven by impulse. We have dissociative amnesia not because someone has consciously blocked something out: but during the time, the body only has access to impulse reactions, doesn"t have access to prefrontal cortex- language. Ask yourself the purpose of the behaviour: so you can determine how you will manage it. If they use the label psychic, spiritual: don"t argue, but need to let them know that these parts are all part of the whole system. Adrenal deficits: release of adrenaline during trauma, flight or flight response, health conditions. Dissociation is a behaviour that is purposeful: don"t take away it without replacing it with something that serves the same purpose, might need multiple tools because dissociation serves many functions.
