ESH302 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Grand Admiral Thrawn
Document Summary
--this week is our last "theoretical" foray into what makes a good teacher good. --next week onwards we will focus on how good teachers can develop strategies to address ethical dilemmas. --in the lecture i refer to a reading by david carr that explores the distinction in fine detail. Suffice to say, carr, like me, distinguishes between technical skills and character dispositions, naming up the ability to "do" mathematics as an example of the former, and charisma as an example of the latter. He emphasises the importance of "good character" when determining in just what combination these two attributes must present in a professional teacher"s practice, and warns of a wrong "mix. " --the teachers should imagine that they are guides who accompany their children through a [learning] landscape. --the tour should be comfortable, and the teacher should not feel obliged to guide every single student to the very top of the mountain.
