Sir francis galton: physical measurement of intelligence: sensory acuity, strength, reaction speed. Legacy: scientific/empirical approach to human intelligence, statistical methods, nature vs nurture, eugenics (some people are well born) Background of intelligence testing: french gove commissioned him to measure intelligence in children, partnered with theodore simon who gathered anthropometric data as basis of experimental approach to mental testing, 1905 developed three requirements to diagnose mental abilities, 1. Medical approach examining anatomical physiological and pathological signs of intellectual inferiority: 2. pedagogical approach evaluation intelligence based on acquired knowledge, 3. Intelligence testes used in adult populations: no longer used for educational support, used by advocates of eugenics movement, stop abnormals from entering the country, test bias didn"t account for poverty and difficult circumstances. Issue with mental age: hard to make comparisons between people of different ages, solution was ratio iq. Ratio iq: mental age / chronological age x 100, proposed by william stern.
