Problems requiring productive thinking are often solved using insight (the experience of suddenly realising how to solve a problem - the ah-ha moment ) Checkerboard problem - the board is initially covered by 32 dominoes occupying two squares each. Two squares are removed from diagonally opposite corners. There has been controversy as to whether insight is a special process or whether it involves the same processes as other thinking tasks. Metcalfe & wiebe : recorded participants feelings of warmth during insight ( ah-ha . Algebra / incremental problems : require a sequence of steps to achieve a moment) and incremental problems (progressively getting closer to the solution) solution. Participants rated themselves as progressively warmer (closer to the solution) over time required to produce answer. Insight problems : solved through re-representing problem (a flash of insight ) Minimal change in warmth in time before they solved the problem. Every 15s, participants indicated how warm (close to solution) they were.
