Pre-attentive processes are innate whereas automatic processes develop with practice. Pre- attentive processes develop with practice whereas automatic processes are innate. Consistent mapping conditions consisted of letters and numbers as distinct target/distractor groups. Ex: skills in cognitive arithmetic involves direct recall. Argued that the four features above are not always found together. There is no firm dividing line between automaticity and non-automaticity. The features are continuous rather than all-or-none. Most processes involve a blend of automaticity and non-automaticity. Novice performance is limited by lack of knowledge rather than a lack of resources . Separate memory traces are stored each time a stimulus is responded. More memory traces means faster retrieval and less effortful processing. Does not predict elimination of capacity demands or loss of voluntary control, just faster and smoother behaviour. Driving and other self-paced tasks are not performed in parallel.
