PSYC2013 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Inattentional Blindness, Change Blindness, Coherent Control
Document Summary
Our perceptual system does not always respond appropriately to change within the visual environment. Inattentional blindness: the failure to notice an unexpected, but fully-visible item when attention is diverted to other aspects of a display. Mack and rock - objects at fixation are typically the focus of attention. However, when the task requires focusing attention away from fixation, attention to objects at fixation is actively inhibited. Present a primary task (judging the longest of two arms in a cross) and then on the fourth trial present a critical stimulus with the arms (a dot) ask if they saw anything unusual. 5000 subjects were tested over 7 years. Took so long to complete the study because after every trial, they were asked if they saw anything unusual changes the attention of the participant. But 75% of subjects noticed color, flicker, and motion. What about the other 25% - there is no perception without attention.
