Theory: freud"s view was that personality is shapred by, early childhood experiences, unconscious motives, desures and fears, uncnscoius conflict between what an individual wants to do & what is acceptable. Early childhood experiences were governed by what freud termed psychosexual stages : oral lasts from birth to about 18 months. Sucking and biting are favourite activites: anal lasts frm about 18 months to three or four years old. Holding it and letting it go are greatly enjoyed: phallic lasts from three or four to five, six or seven. Masturbation is common: latency lasts from five, six or seven to puberty, that is, somewhere aroiund 12 years old. Freud claimed that we are governed by all kinds of principles, instincts and drives, which often come into conflict with eachother. Defence mechanisms: freud claimed we revolved many of the conflicts in our minds with defence.
