PSYC1001 Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: Analytical Psychology, Personal Unconscious, Collective Unconscious
26/03/2018 Jungās Analytical Psychology (1875-1961)
ļ·Freud thought Jung would be a good successor for developing his psycho-analytic theories
ļ·The personal unconscious ā repressed ideas, memories and impulses
ļ·The collective unconscious ā this distinguishes him from Freud; Jung thinks itās the most
powerful system of the psyche; made up of archetypes; there are patterns of instinctual
behaviour (we inherit them)
ļ·He believed that the archetypes people had were from their ancestors; that they were
timeless; that they were inherited
ļ·Archetypes: Child-God, Mother (symbolised by female provider, e.g. Mary, Church,
University), Trickster, Hero, Shadow, Animus/Anima, Persona
ļ·Archetypes explain synchronicity (where one event has/you think has caused the other)
ļ·This is more of a pseudo-science, not a scientific theory
ļ·Jung thought that Freud put too much emphasis on sex
ļ·He influenced the dispositional/trait theories ā he was the first to construct an
introversion/extroversion typology
ļ·Also influenced the humanistic/existential theories ā develop unique patterns of traits and
how they relate to the unconscious ā we are all on the path to becoming our best versions of
ourselves, according to Jung
