After Neolithic period, there was still plenty of trepanning (cutting holes into the skull)

The Hebrew’s and Persians thought that pain of the head was a punishment from God
Egyptian’s had more insight for their time
Hippocrates – mental illness is a natural occurrence in the human body, therefore
illuminating the role of demons and other supernatural forces
He thought it had to do with the 4 essential fluids (blood, phlegm, yellow bile and black bile)
– imbalance meant problem, they would practice “bloodletting”
Before the 8th century, mental illness was dealt with in the persons home, after the 8th
century, there were mental hospitals (e.g. Baghdad, Aleppo, Damascus)
There was a lot of superstition and shame regarding mental illness which resulted in abuse
e.g. hiding them in cellars/cages
Psychiatry vs. Psychology – electroconvulsive shock therapy (ECT)

Psychology became more clinical – Lightner Witmer – applied work on learning disabilities,
made first psychological clinic
