Lecture 4
The Wild Boy of Aveyron
• Name given to a boy found roaming the woods of Averyon in Sothern
France in 1799. Behaved liked a wild animal, giving indications that he
was raised by wild animals
Gustav Theidor Fechner (1801-1887)
• Father of Psychophysics
• Focus on sensory system
• The central idea: we are a product of evolution in a physical environment
so, why shouldnt our brain, as a product of this process, not obey
physical rules
Webers law (originally from lifting weights 18)
• Ernst Weber (1795-1878)
• The change in a stimulus that will be just noticeable is a constant ratio of
the original stimulus
Clever (Kluger) Hans
1. Fact: based on direct observation
2. Theory: an idea as to how these facts can be explained, given what we
know already
3. Hypothesis
4. Test
Subliminal Perception
• Stimulus is registered and processed without subjects awareness
• Ice-cube sex
Karl Popper (1902-1994)
• Falsifiability or refutability= a statement
Massive Changes in the history of Psychology
• Based on big discoveries, change of Zeitgeist
• Key players dont change
• a new scientific theory does not triumph by convincing its opponents
and making them see the light, but rather because its opponents
eventually die and a new generation grows up that is familiar with it
Wundt
• First experimental lab in Leipzig 1879, so controlled experiments
• He wasnt interested in mental health or psychological problems, he
wanted to know how the mind and brain works

Subliminal perception: stimulus is registered and processed without subjects awareness. Karl popper (1902-1994: falsifiability or refutability= a statement. Structuralism: the search of the primitive experiences that constitute thought, mental elements are the building blocks of our conscious experience, auditory sensations, visual (colour, form), tactile (pressure, temperature, Introspection as a technique to look into the brain pain), time (temporal events: the brain puts them together (synthesis, also known as apperception)
