INFO1111 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Computer-Mediated Communication, Environmental Noise, Interaction Model
INFO1111 – Week 3
• Theory behind communication and how to communicate effectively
• LaTeX introduction
Communication
• a process by which information is exchanged between individuals through a common
system of symbols, signs, or behaviour https://www.merriam-
webster.com/dictionary/communication
• Communication has a purpose and method
• Difference between communication and EFFECTIVE communication
Models of Communication
• Concept of sender and receiver in communication depends on the model being used
(transmission, interaction and transaction model)
• All have the following components:
o Participants – senders and/or receivers of the message
o Messages – content being conveyed (verbal or otherwise)
o Encoding – process of turning internal thoughts to a message
o Decoding – process of turning a message into internal thought
o Channels – route by which the message is sent
• Transmission Model
o Communication seen as a linear, one-way process
o Sender intentionally sends a message to the receiver
o Focuses on the message and its sender
o Responsibility of the sender to ensure communication is effective
o Includes the concept of interference (noise including environmental noise,
speaking difference languages, degradation of message) that disrupts effective
communication of the message from sender to receiver
o Forms the basis of more complex models
o Often applied to computer mediated communication such as text messaging
• Interaction Model
o Communication seen as a two-way process where participants alternate as
sender and receivers, providing and receiving feedback on messages within a
physical and psychological context
o Focus on interaction between participants rather than the message
o Includes the idea that multiple messages pass between participants, both
intentionally and unintentionally
o Context of communication important aspect of this model, as it influences
interpretation
• Transaction Model
o Further develops the idea of context within communication to include, social,
relational and cultural context as well as physical and psychological contexts
o Communication is more than a process to convey meaning
