How we study sociology in the study of literature. Bourdieu (1920-2002): french sociologist (was a theory, but was interested in the practical applications; Are people born with good taste, or is it socially constructed: your personal tastes can change. Depends of social class, upbringing, etc: rules of art: genesis and structure of the literary field (1992) Why are we studying sociology in a comp lit class: "sociology and arts do not make good bedfellows. Field: social spaces where actors/agents struggle to occupy dominant positions (gain more capital), e. g. art, education, religion. Habitus: the traits and identity derived from your social class in life since birth which is impressed onto your personality, gender identity, ethnic background, socio-economic background, which determines how the agent will act in the field. This is an unconscious trait(s); how you see the world; unconscious strategies which would define how well you would do in a certain field.
