Contrastingly, took until mid-1960s for frg to have first such memorial. Gdr reluctant to engage with germany"s role in third reich but also keen to take control of public memory and bend it to the vision it wanted to portray. In early years of east germany, history and memory were painted in very black and white tones. Practice of administered" history black-and-white historiography that postulated two lines of development progressive (gdr was outcome) v reactionary (led inevitably to establishment of frg and western allies).
