EXSS2022 Lecture Notes - Lecture 11: Multiple Organ Dysfunction Syndrome, Heat Stroke, Circulatory Collapse
Document Summary
Homeotherm: organism that maintains its body temperature at a regular level due to its metabolic activity (humans) Poikilotherms: organism that cannot maintain its body temperature, varies greatly. Begins to develop when body temperature exceeds 37degrees. Increased risk of obesity, t2d, cancer, cardiovascular disease. Increased heat related issues (syncope, exhaustion, stroke, cv failure, death) Leads to - no barrier in intestines - leakage of endotoxins. Internal heat production must equal the sum of convection, conduction, evaporation, radiation. Convection: transfer of heat from one place to another by the transfer of fluids. Conduction: losing heat through physical contact with another object or body. Evaporation: the transfer of heat from the conversion of water to gas (sweat) Radiation: loss of heat through the air (moving away from body) Integumentary system: organ system that protects the body from various kinds of damage such as loss of water (includes skin, appendages, nails, hair) Epidermis (top layer) > dermis > hypodermis (inner)
