Hypercorrection - the phenomenon of someone imposing the correction of the pronunciation of a word where it doesn"t exist. e. g. the distinguishes between accents, This leads to the idea of pronunciation as an index of class. Similar to grammar, when "which" as a word is used as a coordinating conjunction instead of and, a sociolinguistic marker of sophistication. Shall and shan"t, instead of will or won"t. Referring to phonetics: the sounds of language (from an introduction to language) - from the course reader. Exercises: phonetic symbols for the first sounds of each word, phonetic symbols for the last sounds of each word, writing the listed words in phonetic transcription, correcting errors in phonetic transcription of c. s. Notes from activity: phonetic transcription of the seafarer. It"s also important to mark the stress of a multi-syllable word (an apostrophe-like symbol to indicate which syllable is stressed).
