ENGL1007 Lecture 10: ENGL1007_Lecture 10_Sounds and Letters p.1
Document Summary
Specialist concepts to capture and talk about grammatical phenomena - this language is not common to regular vocabulary. Speech is prior to writing - in the history of each individual and of each society; there was no society that communicated by writing without speech. Traditional grammar ignores the embodiment of language in speech; grammar has only ever developed as a subject of serious study in literate cultures, for some scholars. The development of writing presupposes a certain self-consciousness of writing. Once you can write, you can focus on the detail of wording rather than the actual point being made. The alphabet only invented once in the whole history of humanity - credit to the phonecians invented the alphabet - they adapted the egyptians early writing system, where each symbol would represent a single sound. Ancient greeks adapted this (found through trade) then taken up by romans, inherited by the middle ages.
