Lecture 6
Types of Variables
• Nominal
o Discrete, categorical attributes
o Examples: sex, religious affiliation, marital status
• Ordinal
o Possible to logically rank-order attributes
o E.g. ranking between preferred modes of transport, level of pain felt
• Scale
o Difference separating attributes has meaning; intervals are standard
o E.g. standardised intelligence tests, actual age, number of convictions
Coding and Data Entry
• Coding
o Systematic organisation of data through coding procedures and codebooks into a
format that is computer-readable
• Data entry
o Entering data into a computer file in a spreadsheet or grid format with data linked to
variables described in the codebook
Composite variables
• Variable made up of two or more variables that are conceptually related to one another
Descriptive Statistics -Univariate Analysis
• Absolute frequency (head count)
• Relative frequency (percentage or proportion of participants)
• Mean, mode, median
• Dispersion (measured through standard deviation)
