Nominal
o Discrete, categorical attributes
o Examples: sex, religious affiliation, marital status
Ordinal
o Possible to logically rank-order attributes
o E.g. ranking between preferred modes of transport, level of pain felt
Scale
o Difference separating attributes has meaning; intervals are standard
o E.g. standardised intelligence tests, actual age, number of convictions
Coding and Data Entry
Coding
o Systematic organisation of data through coding procedures and codebooks into a
format that is computer-readable
Data entry
o Entering data into a computer file in a spreadsheet or grid format with data linked to
variables described in the codebook
Composite variables
Variable made up of two or more variables that are conceptually related to one another
Descriptive Statistics -Univariate Analysis
Absolute frequency (head count)
Relative frequency (percentage or proportion of participants)
Mean, mode, median
Dispersion (measured through standard deviation)
