BIOL1008 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Ernest Hemingway, Carabinieri
Document Summary
Gentlemenin hemingway"s novel a farewell to arms, the subject of war occasionally makes its appearance. However, with the onset of war comes a new question, a new kind of aspect within humans that could only arise as a result of such an adversity. Some people view militarism as heroism; concepts such as patriotically fighting for your country or undertaking valorous actions in wartime could be seen as the traits of a hero. However, a farewell to arms demonstrates that war heroism is not defined by these abstract concepts which become mere words in war. Hemingway defined courage and bravery and heroism as grace under pressure . However, it seems that true heroism is nothing short of the ability of one to confront fear, pain and death. True war heroism is actually bravery in the face of adversity. The views of frederic henry on the issue of heroism seem to reflect hemingway"s views itself.
