Sleep loss, and disorders of sleep/wake function are among the most commonly reported health problems. They are very common, affecting more than 10% of the population. The frequency of sleep disorders tends to increase with age. They are also a frequent cause of accidents. They can have profound effects on: daytime functioning, quality of life, risk of comorbidities. Sleep disorders may represent the first symptom of an underlying disorder (eg. depression, Leep diso(cid:396)de(cid:396)s (cid:272)a(cid:374) also affe(cid:272)t the (cid:272)ourse of other medical conditions (eg. epilepsy, stroke) Insomnia is the inability to sleep, or the general feeling of not getting enough sleep. Insomnia involves difficulty with: falling asleep, going back to sleep, and, waking too early. Irritability: daytime fatigue, anxiety, waves of drowsiness. Sleep apnea is a sleep disorder in which breathing repeatedly stops and starts. It is considered to be the most undiagnosed deadly problem in medicine, with 38,000 fatal heart attacks and strokes in the us.
