HUBS1404 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Autoimmune Disease, Immunoglobulin M, Lymphocyte
Document Summary
The human body - a castle under siege. The innate immune components are the moats, walls, traps, alarms, infantry & scouts. The cells of the adaptive immune response are the archers, knights and men-at-arms who attack when the first lines of defence fails. With innate immunity, it responds to all bacteria and invaders the same way. Adaptive immune responds and recognizes the specific invader. Innate attracts immune cells to the infected area but adaptive immune cells are sent out throughout the entire body. Remembers specific pathogen and reacts forcefully and rapidly against second infection. With humoral immunity, it relates with anything that lives outside the cell and propagates through the blood stream. Antibodies can"t get inside the cell so need a cellular component to attack invaders inside the cell. Specific immune cells respond to foreign particles due to antigens. Release of antibodies and/or cytotoxic t cell production. Components/parts of pathogen that leads to the generation of antibodies or immune cells.
