1. Why should I teach writing through text forms?
- Text types can act as starting points
- Students can experiment with combining elements in purposeful ways
2. What are ‘Multiliteracies’?
- Proficient writers can usually access the many forms of literacy in our society
o Visual literacy
▪ The ability to read signs, images, pictures, perspectives, focalisation, shape,
and form
▪ The ability to analyse the power of images in particular contexts
- Students not only have to cope with the alphabet, but with symbols associated with technology
around home, the classroom, and the community
o DVD’S, iPads, computers etc
- Writing is a social act that requires creativity
- Teaching Multiliteracies
o Atmosphere where children can and want to write
o Safe sharing environment
o ‘Real’ writing for ‘Real’ purposes
o Teach different language structures
o Empower students to access different genres
3. How can I teach critical literacy?
- Helps children to understand and to share their likes and dislikes
- Encourages them to form better judgements about what they read
o Discussing the truth in advertising
- Questioning
o Who has produced the text? What is their point of view? Audience?
