Described in 1943 by leo kanner, and in 1944 by hans asperger. These are pervasive developmental disorders- varying in intensity and impact. The dsm-v (previously dsm-iv) criteria are those most commonly used to diagnose autism. Previous terms used (not expected to know for exam) Between 6-18 months delay or regression: affecting speech, hand skills and coordination, prevalence: 1 in 15000 female births.
