Fundamental Movement Skills are
- Basic movement skills that involve our big muscle groups
- Gross motor action patterns which incorporate the movements of different body parts
- Foundation of precursor patterns to more specialised skills in games, sports, dance, gymnastics and
physical recreation activities
Running
Jumping
Skipping
Hopping
Catching
Throwing
Striking
Balancing
- Students will struggle to participate
Categories of FMS
- Body Management Skills
Involve balancing the body in stillness and in motion
Examples are; Static and dynamic balancing, rolling, stopping, landing, bending, stretching, twisting,
turning, swinging and climbing
- Locomotor Skills
Involves transporting the body in any direction from one point to another
For example; Crawling, walking, running, hopping, leaping, jumping for height and distance,
galloping, skipping, dodging and swimming
- Object control Skills
Require controlling implements (For example bats, rackets or hoops) or objects (such as balls) either
by hand or foot
Examples include; throwing, catching, kicking, striking, bouncing and dribbling
