Constructivism and Mathematics Learning Theory
Tabula Rasa
- Children come to school as a blank slate
- Teachers ‘pour’ the information in to the children
Constructivism
- Central to constructivism is the notion that learners play an active role in ‘constructing’ their own
meaning.
Being part of the learning process
- Knowledge is not seen as fixed and existing independently outside the learner. Knowledge is
constructed from (and shaped by) experience
- Social constructivism also acknowledges that although learning is a personal interpretation of the world,
the ‘environment in which learning is taking place’ and ‘learning that requires social interaction ’ is vital.
Learning is a personal interpretation of the world
Reality is a social construct - how each individual child sees the world
- Constructivist approaches require learners to be active and confident in themselves and their abilities. It
takes confidence for learners to admit that there are gaps in their knowledge, or understanding, and to
take the risk of learning new ways of thinking.
- Constructivism emphasises problem solving and understanding
- Constructivism uses authentic tasks, experiences, settings and assessments
Cognitive Constructivists
Jean Piaget (1896-1980)
Learning is adaptation accomplished by:
Assimilation
Using an existing schema (you can think of this prior experience or knowledge) to deal
with something new and unknown
Accommodation
When the existing schemas (knowledge) does not work, and needs to be changes to deal
with a new object and unknown
Equilibrium
Cognitive balance that is restored when accommodation is achieved
Information is organised in to interrelated ideas or schemas
Ernst von Glasersfeld (1917-2010)
- Radical constructivism
- Experiences (both intellectual and personal) interact with previous knowledge to construct new
knowledge
Barbara Rogoff
Learning requires the active involvement of the learner
Collaborative learning is essential
Need to develop ‘learning communities’
Lev Vygotsky (1896-1934)
- The most significant bases of a social constructivist theory were laid down by Lev Vygotsky, in his theory
of the "Zone of Proximal Development" (ZPD).
- He observed that when children were tested on tasks on their own, they rarely did as well as when they
were working in collaboration with an adult.
- The process of engagement with the adult enabled them to refine their thinking or their performance to
make it more effective.
