ED1635 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Australian Curriculum
Mathematics - Lecture 1 - Week 1
Introduction and Overview
What is Mathematics?
- The study of number and evaluation of problems
- Interpret, quantify and communicate
- Creating generations of problem solvers
- Look for patterns and connections wit logical thoughts
- New solutions to old problems
- 3 content strands and 4 proficiencies in the Australian Curriculum
Definitions of Mathematics
- Reasoning and creating activity
- Powerful, precise and conscience means of communication
- Incorporates the processes of questioning, reflecting, reasoning and proof
- Powerful tool for solving familiar and unfamiliar problems
- Integral to scientific and technological advances
- Our whole life is about problem solving
As teachers
- We help to increase problem solving skills
- Develop understanding and promote enthusiasm for numbers
- Allow students to experience the content and proficiencies
- Help them to think mathematically
- Create and engaging atmosphere
- Promote active thinking through work
- Every child can succeed - If we give children success in their work, they will become successful
- Eliminate gender roles and biased within the mathematics field
- Spelke (2005) - ‘no gender differences’ In children cognitive ability
Our children need to:
- Focus on the proficiencies
- We need to teach them understanding so they can develop their own
- They need fluency
- They need problem solving
- And they need reasoning

Document Summary
The study of number and evaluation of problems. Look for patterns and connections wit logical thoughts. 3 content strands and 4 proficiencies in the australian curriculum. Powerful, precise and conscience means of communication. Incorporates the processes of questioning, reflecting, reasoning and proof. Powerful tool for solving familiar and unfamiliar problems. Our whole life is about problem solving. We help to increase problem solving skills. Develop understanding and promote enthusiasm for numbers. Allow students to experience the content and proficiencies. Every child can succeed - if we give children success in their work, they will become successful. Eliminate gender roles and biased within the mathematics field. Spelke (2005) - no gender differences" in children cognitive ability. We need to teach them understanding so they can develop their own. Hattie looked at what made the difference in achievement in schools. In this study he determined that there are six major sources of variance.
