9808 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Endoplasmic Reticulum, Sarcomere, Myocyte
Document Summary
All of these are words to describe muscle, for example : Muscle consists of nearly half of our body"s mass. In order we have the fascicle, then the muscle ber, then the myo bril, the sarcomere and nally the myo lament. Describe the characteristics and functions of muscle tissue. Responsiveness : excite them or irritate them ; receive and respond to a stimulus. Conductivity : wave of excitation that travels along the muscle bre ; electricity goes all the way through the muscle. Contractility : shortens when stimulated (contraction isn"t always shortening) Extensibility : capable of being stretched between contractions. Elasticity : returns to its original resting length after being stretched. Produce movement : move bones with joints. Maintaining posture : erectus spinae and abdominis allow us to stay straight, keep posture. Generating heat : muscle contract which generates heat. Regulating organ volume : example of the heart or stomach. Compare and contrast the three basic types of muscle tissue.
