Document Summary
L3 - development and ageing of body systems. Developing and ageing of body systems: body systems are influenced by extrinsic factors - external things that influence your growth for example malnourishment. Single system can have an impact on the other systems - for example arthritis. Arthritis is an ailment of the skeletal system, causes movement to become painful which can result in ailment of the muscular system and so on. Postnatal development: growth in long bone length occurs at secondary ossification centres - epiphyseal/growth plate. Bone growth only occurs here: the long bones increase in width by appositional bone growth - lays down tissue under periosteum, growth in smaller round bones occurs from the inside out. Growth at the epiphyseal plate ceases at different times for different bones: typically closed ~18-19 years - maximum height. Closure of the epiphyseal plates occurs at a younger age in girls around 15-16: related to maturation and can be used as an assessment.
