Lecture 7 – 17/4/18 – Interjections, prepositions, etc
Interjections
- Are’t related to a other part of speeh
- Express a feeling or emotion, rather than convey a meaning
- Include expletives, yes & no, and gratitude
- E.g wow, yikes, oh dear, shh, hmph
- Ca’t for a proper setee
- Primary (not real words)
- Secondary (really words, but are still fragments)
- Common to speech, but not in formal writing so much
- An exclamation mark does not mean an interjection – yuck! (Interjection) stop! (Imperative
verb)
Prepositions
- Fixed forms – do’t iflet hage for to sho grade et. eept for ear earer,
nearest)
- Come BEFORE the words they have a relationship with
o Ogden ran UP (the stairs)
o Amber was aware OF (the typo)
- Belong to overarching class of words called positionals
- Over, around, into, out of, in front, in, down from, next to etc.
- Express relationships of space & time (position)
- Can also signal relationships such as
o Exception & addition (except for, apart from)
o Comparisons & contrast (similar TO X)
o Cause or effect (because OF X)
o Concession & condition
o Opposition
o Possession
o Source (made OUT OF wood, wrought FROM silver)
- Other functions of prepositions
o Adjectival functions (modify nouns)
o Adverbial functions (modifying verbs, adjectives, other adverbs etc.)
- Almost always come before pronouns, nouns and noun phrases

- The pronoun, noun or noun phrase that follows a preposition is called its object
