WRIT2120 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Babylon Berlin, Netflix
Lecture 1 – 21/2/18 – Introduction
- Babylon Berlin – Netflix
Most important people (in Australian companies)
1. Director producer
2. Scriptwriter producer
3. Actor producer
A screenplay is a blueprint for a work of art that does not yet exist – the screenplay is not the work
of art
A screenplay is written to be read, not filmed. But not reading for pleasure, reading to allow up to
visualise it in our heads. Therefore, we do not put technical stuff/descriptions or acting directions in
them. Screenplays are also used for budgetary purposes.
First draft: negative draft
Second draft: notes scribbled in margins by editor
Scene heading (often known as the slug heading) gives int/ext, location, day/night
Font: Courier 12pt., single spaced
One page of properly formatted screenplay = 1 minute of screen time
Voice over: voice of god speaking; off-screen (O/S): a character speaking but not a voice over
Acting directions in speaking (rilies): a couple in a hundred pages (actors hate them!)
Average screenplay is around 18,000 – 20,000
Can give music queues, but music is expensive, so be careful.
If you cant see it, you cant put it in to a screenplay
