1. Joanna McMillan: Eat for real change
Marck Bitta: What’s wrog with what we eat
- Food is more than the nutrients it contains, part of who we are, our culture and
upbringing, how we interact (dates, celebrations and traditions etc.)
- Food has the same purpose wherever you go
- Nutrition can be destroying some of these things.
- It is now the norm in Australia to be fat, and it comes with a number of chronic
health diseases. (diabetes: 280 dies every year, CV die every 12 min)
- By changing the way, we eat, we can dramatically change these numbers
- It is very hard to change the way that we eat, because of the way we were brought
up to eat.
- The main problem is that people are confused on how to eat (media reporting
skewed truths)
- People substitute nutrients for processed food
- Different nutritional thinking: low fat, paleo, low carb approach, low GI,
Mediterranean, Japanese diet
- Commonality: Based on real whole foods
- Foundations to employ: eat more plant food, change attitude towards food
(different priorities towards food, pleasure/ not pleasure)
- Need to respect food, because we have a choice to choose which diets we want. But
if we are going to implement change, we need to get rid of the diet wars, the quick
fix processed shakes and pills without putting in effort ourselves. We need to focus
on wholesome and maintain the food foundations to sustain balance.
- Above all, we need to enjoy food/ take pleasure in what we are doing otherwise we
will not maintain our eating habits. Only when we change for the long term, will we
change the health statistics.
In the table below, write the foods and/or drinks you would choose on each of these
occasions. Also write down the reason for choosing each food and then list some of the
reasons why the foods might be different on each occasion.
