Module 3 – Diet and Physical Activity Guidelines and Assessment (PART 1)
Objectives
At the end of this module students will be able to do the following:
• List the current Dietary Guidelines and the recommended servings of food groups in
the Australian Guide to Healthy Eating.
• Briefly describe the dietary modelling process used to develop the Australian Guide
to Healthy Eating.
• List the current physical activity and sedentary behaviour guidelines.
• Describe the strengths, weaknesses and limitations of commonly used methods for
diet and physical activity assessment.
• Be familiar with general food intake patterns and physical activity levels in the
Australian adult population.
• Use your knowledge of the current dietary and physical activity guidelines to provide
very basic lifestyle advice.
• Be familiar with the roles of different health professionals in the Joint Position
Statement of Exercise & Sports Science Australia (ESSA) and Dietitians Association of
Australia.
Study Tasks
1. Watch the video Dietary Guidelines and then briefly review the
www.eatforhealth.gov.au and www.nrv.gov.au websites before completing the
following activities:
• Download the Healthy Eating for Adults consumer brochure from the
www.eatforhealth.gov.au website.
• List the five principal recommendations in the Australian Dietary Guidelines.
Do you think these statements provide sufficient guidance for Australians to
consume a healthy diet? Explain your answer.
1) Achieve and maintain a healthy weight, be physically active and choose
amounts of nutritious food and drinks to meet your energy needs.
2) Enjoy a wide variety of nutritious foods from the five food groups every day
(vegetables/legumes, fruit, grains, meat/fish, dairy) plus plenty of water.
3) Limit the intake of foods containing saturated fat, added salt, added sugar
and alcohol
4) Encourage, support and promote breast feeding
5) Care for your food; prepare and store safely
