Document Summary

Lecture 8 tests of high intensity exercise performance: anaerobic metabolism reactions occur without oxygen, aerobic metabolism reactions occur with oxygen (oxidative phosphorylation) All of the energy systems function all of the time but at different rates: atp-pcr system immediate energy source. Creatine phosphate is used to maintain atp levels during high intense exercise: glycolytic system nonoxidative energy source. Glycolysis: breakdown of glucose to form 2 pyruvate or lactic acid (net of 2atp: oxidative phosphorylation oxidative energy source. When there is oxygen, pyruvate is converted to acetyl coa and enters the krebs. Most team sports require repeated sprints, which will rely heavily on all systems, but especially the glycolytic system during active play. The duration of the tests depends on which energy system it is testing. Anaerobic testing tends to assess how performance declines with repeat sprint bouts: atp-pcr. They are fatigue tests, which use repeat bouts of high intensity exercise. Tests can measure the oxygen uptake curve: oxygen deficit, epoc.
