AGRC1020 Lecture 15: AGRC1020 Lecture 15 Digestion
Document Summary
Ingested food becomes an acidic, nutrient-rich broth known as chyme. Blood then travels to the heart and then to other tissues and organs. Digestion and absorption of fats: fats present a particular challenge for digestion, water insoluble - form large globules that cannot be attacked efficiently by digestive enzymes. Between the rectum and the anus are two sphincters; the inner one is involuntary and the outer one is voluntary. Evolutionary adaptations of vertebrate digestive systems correlate with diet. Large pointed incisors and canines that can be used to kill prey and rip away pieces of flesh. Jagged premolars and molars crush and shred food. Usually have premolars and molars with broad, ridged surfaces that grind tough plant material. Incisors and canines are generally modified for biting of pieces. Four bladelike incisors are used for biting, a pair of pointed canines for tearing, four premolars for grinding and six molars for crushing.
