If the solution has a greater concentration than the concentration of the cell water will move out of the cell. If the solution has the same concentration as the inside of the cell there will be no net movement of water and the solution is isoosmotic. If the solution has a lower concentration than the inside of the cell the water will move into the cell and the cell will swell. This solution is hypoosmotic: movement of water affects the tonicity or shape of the cell. If the cell shrinks the solution is termed hypertonic. If the cell stays the same shape we say the solution is isotonic. If the cell swells we say the solution is hypotonic.
