What we will get from this course --> snapshot of psychology from the leaders of psychology (researchers etc.)

Taught by people who sculpture the field

Science news popping up in media --> half of that is wrong
•
Teach the skills of identifying which skills are true
•
How to find the truth about psychology
•
Psychology is a science

2009 Obama inauguration vs 2017 Trump Inauguration

Obama's had more people as it seems from the photograph

How we evaluate the truth of this situation?
○
Both photos were taken 40 minutes before speech was given
○
Perhaps there have been reasons mitigating in the images
○
Ticketing booth in trump's inauguration --> entrance wasn't open yet, traffic was bad etc.

Case study: Trump inauguration

As scientists, we manipulate and control these variables in experiments

To make sure that when capture the data, we have a controlled experiment (conditions in both situations are the
same)

Who is Psych 1001?
Taught by the research leaders in the field of psych

Busy people --> need to be leaders in their respective field of research
•
Please don't ask questions directly over email --> unlikely get a response
•
Dr. David White --> course coordinator/also a researcher in face recognition
•
Wait until 3rd or 4th year before getting face identification course
•
Part of the forensic psychology lab with the legal system --> witness identification research
•
Coordinator --> organise lectures, type the time slots, coherent in the content
•
Not the first port of call in emails
•
Head tutor --> organises and coordinates tutors - James Dunn
•

Important to pass the course --> if you don't pass this course, can't go on to do more psychology

SONA --> psychology can't survive as a science without participation and initiation of lab experiments
•
RSA - training ability to find information and sources to understand how information is derived in psychology pages
•
Mid-semester exams --> done in computer labs
•
SONA - can do an additional 6 points to add a 4% bonus to your grade
•
