MFAC1521 Lecture Notes - Lecture 49: Pelvic Inflammatory Disease, Salpingitis, Endometritis
Document Summary
Pid: an infection of the upper female reproductive tract (e. g. uterus, fallopian tubes, ovaries) and surrounding connective tissues, to compare, lower female reproductive tract = cervix, vagina. A localized area of pus found in the fallopian tube, ovaries or adjacent pelvic organs (e. g. rectum, bladder, uterus, vagina) Can be life-threatening if the abscess ruptures may result in sepsis. Inflammation of the peritoneum (membrane that lines the abdomen) Occurs most often from an infection of the fallopian tubes. *note: ~30-40% of pid cases are caused by polymicrobes (multiple microorganisms) Serovars/serotypes (a distinct variation within a species of bacteria/virus) Ab, b, ba or c = cause trachoma (infection of the eye) may lead to blindness) D, e, f, g, h, i, j, k (d-k) = cause: urethritis, pid, neonatal pneumonia, neonatal conjunctivitis. L1, l2, l2a or l3 = cause lymphogranuloma venereum (infection of the lymphatics and lymph nodes)
