Computer hardware consists of electronic components and related gadgetry that input, process, output, and store data according to instructions encoded in computer programs or software. Every computer has a central processing unit (cpu). The cpu selects instructions, processes them, performs arithmetic and logical comparisons, and stores results of operations in memory: a computer with two cpus is called a dual-processor computer. The cpu works in conjunction with main memory. Solid-state storage (ssd drive) is much faster than a hard drive, but more expensive. Personal computers (pcs) are classic computing devices that are used by individuals. Pcs were the primary computer type used in business. Pcs are gradually being supplanted by tablets and other mobile devices: a mobile device called a phablet combines the functionality of a smartphone with the larger screen of a tablet. Smartphones are cell phones with processing capability: a server is a computer that is designed to support processing requests from many remote computers and users.
