How do we resolve ambivlance: give them a safe environment to comfortably discuss this ambivalence, the more someone discusses the reasons for chnage the more likely they are to change behaviour. The more they discuss reasons against change, the less likely they are to change behaviour: people believe what they hear themselves say. Motivational interviewing stages: build a good therapeutic relationship in the spirit of mutual collaboration, openly discuss ambivalence to change with special attention to the reasons for change ( change talk"). Avoid discussion of the reasons against change ( sustain talk": consolidate commitment to change, plan action steps and monitor progress. Change talk: use open ended questions to direct the conversation towards reasons for change talk.
