Document Summary
Lecture 6 - 08/08/18 - exercise prescription for special populations. Asthma: chronic inflammatory disease resulting in narrowing of the airways, affects approx 1 in 9 aussies, leading cause of burden of disease in those aged 5-14 years, symptoms, vary over time and range in severity. Include: coughing, wheezing, tightness in chest, shortness of breath, can resolve spontaneously or medication may be required, risk factors, age and gender act syngergistically, young males and older females, low ses, race. Increase volume before intensity and do not increase volume or intensity by more than 20% per week: resistance exercise for insulin resistance, 3x per week, multi joint exercises. Initially 1 set of 10-15 reps then progress to 3 sets of 8-10 reps. Immaturity of physiologic systems means children do not respond to exercise the same way as adults: exercise in cooler environment and ensure proper hydration.
