Lecture 19 - 15/05/18 - growth and maturation. Somatic growth - changes in body size and stature: weight, height, lean tissue mass, skeletal breadth, head circumference, skinfold measurements. 6 years - boys and girls same height. Age is linear but growth and maturation are not. Growth charts: uses, comparison with normative values, tracking an individual"s growth, don"t take into account variance in timing of adolescent growth spurt. Cdc growth charts: center of disease control charts - from america but used world wide, e. g 95% percentile - 95% of people your age weigh less than you, 5% weigh more. Velocity curves: require serial measurements over a period of time, can only determine peak height velocity (phv) or peak weight velocity (pwv) Indicates health issues: other information is important (e. g parental height and pubertal stage) Increases again between 10-12 for girls: 13-15 for boys. If you grow less than 1 cm per year - you are at full gown adult height.
