BABS1201 Notes LEC 21
LEC 21: Genes in populations
Gene pool: collection of all genes in a population
Variation at a locus: at least two alleles, with varying frequencies (proportion)
Non-evolving populations: ex. large asexual prokaryote population, each generation
will have the same proportion of gene variation (e.g. ½ B, 2/3 b in first generation
½ B, 2/3 b in second generation)
Hardy-Weinberg principle: allele and genotype frequencies will remain constant if
there are no evolutionary influences
o Assumptions: random mating, infinite population size, no mutation or
migration, alleles have equal chance of surviving (no natural selection)
