SCI1020 Lecture 4: Part 2a How Data is obtained
Document Summary
Sample data must be truly reflecting the population. So far we"ve learned how to describe data (histograms, boxplots) Now we are going to produce data (sampling and experimental design) Population (parameters) the larger group of units about which inferences are to be made. Population is exactly a single value there is no error. Sample (statistics) is the smaller estimate of the population that is actually measured. Data from a sample can be used to make inferences about a much larger group or the population if the sample chosen can be considered to be representative of the larger group of interest. Convenience sample is where the selected sample is just most convenience to us and is not representative of the population with regards to the question of interest. How do we go about choosing a sample which is truly representative of the population. Where everyone in the population has the same specified chance of making it into the sample-- randomness.
