PSY2061 Lecture Notes - Lecture 12: Hypnagogia, Epigenetic Clock, Obstructive Sleep Apnea
Document Summary
Stage 3 = 3 slow wave sleep (sws) Recuperation theories of sleep: being awake disrupts the homeostasis (internal physiological stability) of the body in some way and sleep is required to restore it, commonly believed that the function of sleep is to restore energy levels. In western cultures, most people who sleep little or irregularly do so because they are under stress (from illness, excessive work, shift work, drugs or examinations), which could have adverse effects independent of any sleep loss. Microsleeps = brief periods of sleep, typically about 2 or 3 seconds long, during which the eyelids droops and the volunteers become less responsive to external stimuli, even though they remain sitting or standing. If they don"t awaken immediately, it gets shoved off to a shallow pool of water. Typically, experimental rats died 12 days later while the yoked controls stay reasonably healthy.
