PSY1011 Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: Temporal Lobe, Brain Tumor, Memory Consolidation
Document Summary
Role of the temporal lobe: hippocampus is located each of the temporal lobes. The functions of the hippocampus are to learn explicit memories, consolidate explicit memories, transfer new memories to storage and link emotion to memory: amygdala is an almond shaped structure in the temporal lobe next to the hippocampus. It regulates the emotion of fear and aggression and plays a general role of the formation of emotional memory. The neuron: neurons are cells within the nervous system that transmit information to other nerve cells, muscle, or gland cells. Consolidation & memory decline: memory consolidation is a category of processes that stabilize a memory trace after its initial acquisition. A memory trace is a change in the nervous system caused by memorizing something: consolidation theory is a physical and chemical change that allows memories to be permanently stored. It takes from 30 minutes to life for this process to be completed.
