Document Summary

Week 11 sleep & circadian regularity: from undergrads to shift workers. There are very few people in the world who haven"t experienced electrical light. Now, having electrical light we can change our sleep/wake patterns and circadian rhythms at will. Electrical lighting has enabled shift work in modern industrial society. However, our physiology hasn"t adapted/changed to accommodate electrical light. Yetish et al. (2015) > compared preindustrial societies to industrialised society. Found preindustrial societies slept just under 7 hours (not too different from industrialised). They were also more exposed to the elements and security threats which meant their sleep wasn"t always consolidated. Pilz et al. (2018) > looked at people in a transitional society (some had recently got electricity, some had never had it). Found the longer they"ve had access to electricity the later they sleep (later shift in bedtime). Preindustrial usually sleeping 10pm-6am, activity correlating with natural lighting, light drops very low after sunset.
